Acrow Bridge Furnishes Modular Steel Spans for Use During Rehabilitation of RFK Bridge in New York

Exit ramps providing uninterrupted traffic flow on one of NY’s busiest bridges

(Parsippany, New Jersey) – 16 May 2016 – Acrow Bridge, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, reported today the completion of the installation of a modular steel ramp for interim exit from the RFK bridge during major construction on the 79 year old bridge complex which serves some 170,000 daily customers. One of the largest public works projects of the Great Depression and formerly known as the Triborough Bridge, it was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1986 by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Acrow’s work on the exit ramp is part of the $68.3 million project to rehabilitate and reconstruct the East 125th Street access ramps and the overall commitment of $1 billion in investments committed through 2026 to keep the bridge complex safe and operational for motorists in three different boroughs as well as those using the bridge as a key link to several major regional expressways throughout the state.

Several aspects of the job were unique. While the rented Acrow structure consists of spans totaling 670’ in length, it begins as a two lane ramp for 340’ (with width of 24’), then widens to accommodate three lanes of traffic for an additional 330’ (with a width of 36’). Additionally, the ramp required a change in elevation of 33 feet, and because the existing ramp could not be closed without significant traffic interruptions, speed in construction and installation was critical. The three lane structure was assembled on Acrow’s 700XS towers and the two lane ramp was built on top of that. Several methods were used for installation of the spans including both a roller launch and an overnight crane-assisted launch. It is anticipated that the Acrow Bridge will be in place until October 2016.

The Acrow components were rented to DeFoe Construction and Northeast Structural Steel, contractors for the project. Design Engineer was Hardesty and Hanover, and Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. was Resident Engineer. The project owner is the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority of New York.
